2022 Meissen Cup – Müller and Campbell win Meissen porcelain trophy

After two years of forced break due to corona, the 50th anniversary of the Meissen Cup took place on Saturday. This year's winners were the German athlete Nico Müller and the British Emily Campbell.

The elite weightlifters had to be patient for two years, now the time had come this Saturday. The Meissen Cup celebrated its 50th anniversary with a year’s delay and did not disappoint the spectators in the sold-out hall in Meißen, Saxony. Almost 40 male and female athletes from twelve nations competed in three groups and showed impressive performances on stage.

And especially in the men’s event the German athletes could convince. Roberto Gutu finished third (137/141/144, 164/169/173, 632 points), Raphael Friedrich second (155x/155/160, 180/185/190, 686 points) and the two-time European champion Nico Müller crowned himself the winner of the tradition-rich competition with 693 Robi points and six valid attempts (145/150/155, 186/191/196).

Mutterstadt lifter Max Lang was satisfied with his performance with six valid attempts.

Three-time cup winner Max Lang, meanwhile, came in fourth place with six valid attempts (135/140/142, 165/170/175) and 557 Robi points. “I am satisfied with my results, I have fulfilled the requirements from the coach and thus had a successful start into the competition season. I am happy that Nico won. He has delivered a bombastic and above all very solid competition and is therefore the deserved winner.”

Campbell dominates in women’s event

In the women’s event, however, there was no getting past Britain’s Emily Campbell this evening. The reigning European champion (+87 kg) scored all six attempts (113/117/120, 149/154/158), achieved 538 Robi points and thus relegated Denmark’s Line Gude (479 points) and Finland’s Saara Retulainen (470 points) to second and third place.

The women’s podium

Weightlifting Shop athlete Scheila Meister placed seventh in the end (411 points), did not finish among the top five, but was nevertheless satisfied with her performance. “My snatch went great, I was even able to equal my PR with 86 kg. The clean and jerk didn’t feel so good last week, but I still managed to lift 103 kg. The target was actually 107 kg, but unfortunately I did not manage a valid jerk today.”

Another strong performance was put on stage by junior lifter Antonia Ackermann. With a new PR in the snatch of 92 kg and valid 110 kg in the clean and jerk she reached 427 Robi points in the end.
